Mixed media animation: the style that’s everywhere

You’ve seen this aesthetic. In Spider-Verse. In Arcane. In the Cannes Lions 2026 winners. 3D characters with hand-drawn linework, paint textures over pixels, stop motion sharing the screen with live action. But what is it, exactly?

In this post, we break down what mixed media animation is, where the current wave came from, which projects defined the shift and why the trend reached advertising.

What is mixed media animation?

Mixed media animation is the combination of different animation and image-making techniques within a single work. 2D over 3D. Paint over CG. Stop motion next to live action. Collage, photography, comic book halftones, all living in the same frame.

The core idea is that no single technique needs to dominate. Each one comes in when it serves the story. The result is a visual language that can change from scene to scene, or even from character to character.

The technique itself has existed for decades. What changed in recent years is the scale: it moved from experimental shorts to blockbusters, streaming series and award-winning commercials.

The turning point: Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018)

For a long time, mainstream CG animation followed an unspoken standard: the smoother and more realistic, the better. Into the Spider-Verse broke that standard.

The film placed 3D characters over hand-drawn linework, mixed comic halftones, text balloons and different frame rates for different characters. All of it in a studio production with global distribution and an Oscar for Best Animated Feature as proof that audiences were ready.

Spider-Verse didn’t invent mixed media. But it showed the approach could work at massive scale, and the wave grew from there.

Across the Spider-Verse: each universe with its own language

The 2023 sequel pushed the idea even further. In Across the Spider-Verse, every universe has its own visual identity.

Gwen’s world looks like living watercolor, with colors that react to her emotional state. Spider-Punk is an animated punk zine, built from cutouts and collages that shift every frame. Pavitr’s Mumbattan has its own line, its own rhythm, its own palette.

The style tells you where you are before anyone speaks. Technique becomes narrative information.

The trend spread: Arcane, Mitchells, Puss in Boots, TMNT

After Spider-Verse, mixed media showed up in wildly different projects:

  • Arcane (Fortiche, 2021): 3D characters with hand-painted textures and 2D effects, creating a look that feels like illustration in motion.
  • The Mitchells vs. the Machines (2021): doodles and scribbles drawn over the CG, reflecting the point of view of the protagonist, a young filmmaker.
  • Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (2022): frame rate used as a dramatic tool, with action scenes animated in a choppier style that evokes storybook illustration.
  • TMNT: Mutant Mayhem (2023): a look that feels like a teenager’s sketchbook come to life, with deliberately imperfect linework.

Each project mixes techniques in its own way. What unites them is the decision that style should serve the story, rather than a standard of realism.

Mixed media reached advertising

The movement didn’t stay confined to film and series. In recent years it gained ground in advertising, and Cannes Lions 2026 made that clear.

One example is The Ring: The Legacy Continues, by BigTime Creative Shop, which mixes handmade miniatures, archive footage and animation to tell 103 years of boxing history. The film won a Silver Lion in Film Craft.

For brands, mixed media solves a real problem: in a feed saturated with polished images, an aesthetic that blends textures, lines and materials stands out and signals intention. The craft is visible.

Why does this aesthetic work?

When every style is possible, style becomes a storytelling choice.

A watercolor scene communicates something different from smooth CG. A shaky outline says something about the character. A lower frame rate creates tension or nostalgia. Technique stops being decoration and starts carrying meaning.

That’s why mixed media is likely to outlast a passing visual fad. It expands the narrative toolkit available to anyone making animation.

Why BIG recommends it

Because this trend freed animation from chasing photorealism.

For years, the question guiding many projects was “how real can it look?”. Today the question has changed: “what should this story make the audience feel?”. For anyone working in animation, CGI and motion design, that shift opens up an enormous creative field.

O ponto de virada: Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018)

Into the Spider-Verse quebrou esse padrão.

A técnica vira informação narrativa.
