The new episode of BIG Cast, the podcast by BIG Studios, features Daniel Chagas Martins, Creative Director at AlmapBBDO. Over a 26-year career, he has worked at some of Brazil’s leading agencies and created campaigns that shaped the country’s pop culture, such as Posto Ipiranga and É Coisa Nossa for Guaraná Antarctica.
In the conversation, Daniel talks about how his career began, what he learned at each agency, the role of awards, the new generation of creatives and where advertising is heading.
Before joining the industry, Daniel worked as a COBOL programmer at his father’s software company and taught math at a public school, a job his mother helped him get. While studying at ESPM, he landed his first internship at a small neighborhood agency, arriving at the interview with a broken leg and a portfolio full of tiny column ads.
That experience opened the door to McCann, where he stayed for eight years.
Throughout the episode, Daniel shows how each agency culture left a different mark on the way he works.
McCann: one of the largest agencies in the country at the time, with a strong focus on process and business. There he learned to navigate large structures and witnessed the creative turnaround led by Adriana Cury.
DM9: Daniel joined the agency right after being selected to represent Brazil at Young Lions. It was an intense period, with frequent all-nighters, that shaped creatives at an accelerated pace and led the agency to Agency of the Year at Cannes.
Talent: where he spent three years working on Posto Ipiranga and learned to present only two routes to the client, both very strong, instead of a long list of options.
Neogama: a shorter stint focused on craft and production value, which produced a film that won Gold at Cannes.
AlmapBBDO: Daniel joined Almap in 2015, while Marcello Serpa was still there. For him, the agency’s biggest strength is that creativity lives in every department, from account service to planning.
One of the episode’s themes is the role of awards. The conversation shows how festivals like Cannes Lions have also become important for advertisers, as a way to measure and demonstrate what marketing teams deliver.
Daniel and the host also discuss the use of celebrities and influencers in campaigns. The view they share is simple: choosing a personality needs a clear reason within the idea, and fame alone can’t carry a campaign.
With Almap growing from fewer than 400 to more than a thousand people in recent years, Daniel talks about how the industry has changed and about the young people joining agencies today. In his view, the new generation has brought something valuable: a better balance between work and personal life and more courage to say no. There are still plenty of talented people eager to do meaningful work.
At the end of the episode, Daniel shares a message for the young man at that first interview: keep working, do things the way you believe in, be patient and let your work speak for itself.
