At Annecy 2026, the world’s leading animation festival, some of the biggest prizes went to films and series built on drawing. After years of polished 3D on screens everywhere, hand-drawn animation is back at the center of the conversation.
In this edition of BIG Recommends, we look at the titles behind this wave and what they say about animation right now.
The Cristal for Best Feature went to The Violinist, Singapore’s first animated feature in 15 years. A film built on drawing, frame by frame, that won one of the strongest competitions in recent years.
And it wasn’t alone:
Four of the festival’s highlights had drawing at the heart of their visual language.
Annecy 2026 confirms a path 2D animation was already on.
Klaus (2019), by Sergio Pablos and The SPA Studios, showed 2D could look brand new. The film is hand-drawn, with a lighting and texture technique applied over the linework that adds volume while keeping the drawing alive. It earned an Oscar nomination and won the Annie for Best Feature.
The Boy and the Heron, by Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli, won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature in 2024.
Arco, by Ugo Bienvenu, took the Cristal for Best Feature at Annecy 2025 and an Oscar nomination in 2026.
Maybe audiences missed the hand. The wobble in a line, the life in a drawing, the feeling that someone was there deciding every frame.
In drawn animation, every frame is a choice a person made. You can feel that on screen.
Craft is where many of us fell in love with animation. Seeing hand-drawn work win the biggest prizes again is great news for the whole industry. Strong craft raises the bar for everyone who animates.
